What is an IP Rating and what does it tell you about a product

What is an IP Rating?

IP Rating is an abbreviation for the word Ingress Protection Rating.

In short, an IP rating is split into two parts. The the first number tells us how much solid-state particle protection the product has. This number ranges from 0 - 6. The last number is the liquid particle protection which ranges from 0 - 9K. The lower the number, the less protection an electrical component has against external elements, such as dust or water.

Which IP rating is waterproof? An IP rating with the second number that is greater then 1 can withstand water however there are many factors you need to consider which will be explained in more details below. 

What is IP23 Rating?

An IP23 rating symbolises that a product can be touched by hand and or a solid object greater then 12mm. Additionally, a IP23 rating stats that the product is protected by a light water spray - under 60 degrees Celsius - from a vertical point.

What is IP43 Rating?

IP43 Rating products are effective against screws, tools, and wires greater then 1mm. Additionally, the products can withstand being lightly sprayed by water that is less than 60 degree Celsius from a vertical direction.

What is IP44 Rating?

Similar to IP43 as mentioned above, IP44 rating are also effective against screws, tools, and wires greater then 1mm, however they can be lightly sprayed with water from any direction. IP44 is the most popular electrical rating.

What is IP54 Rating?

IP54 Rating is starting to offer far greater protection from solid and liquid particles. A product with an IP54 rating is protected from ingress of limited dust particles however shouldn't exceed a sufficient quantity. The product is also protected by water splashing against it from any direction.

What is IP65 Rating? 

An IP65 rating is fully protected from solid particles such as dust and is protected from water being sprayed from a nozzle from any direction.

What is IP68 Rating?

An IP68 product rating tells us that the product is fully protected from solid particles such as dust and the product can be submerged under water specified by the manufacturer.
